This one has a standard 1898 base (same for both rifles and carbines), a model 1902 ladder and rifle leaf (1st type), a model 1903 windage knob (used from 1905 on refurbished guns after model 1903 sights were changed to the model 1905 style), an 1898 aperture (eye piece) modified for use on the 1902 leaf. Sights can make your head spin, but generally one can find the 1896, 1898, 1901 or 1902 used on Krag carbines. This carbine is number 125,206.Įarly issue 1898 carbines had the 1896 carbine rear sight, but during later production, overhaul or rebuild, a later type could have been used. They were in the serial number range of 118,894 to 134,256 and carbine numbers were interspersed with rifle numbers. Mechanically it is in fine shape with a good bore (mostly shiny, strong rifling, no pits or rings, needs thorough cleaning).Īccording to Brophy’s THE KRAG RIFLE, about 5000 (5002 according to another source) of the Model 1898 carbines were manufactured.
